Supervisors

We count with top-level scientists from renowned European research institutions and chemical companies to guide our Doctoral Candidates.

Our supervisors have been selected both for their academic merits and for their wide experience in instructing young researchers. They have guided over 70 PhD students, most of whom have since continued a successful career in academia or the private sector.

 

Jose Antonio Fernández Salas  

PIA Coordinator 

Ramón y Cajal Researcher, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain 

DC4 Academic Main Supervisor  

Dr. Fernández Salas has a strong background in the field of synthesis and catalysis. He is a Ramón Cajal researcher, the most prestigious research contract in Spain. His current research deals with the development of new and greener catalytic methods. With over 70 articles, his h-index is 26 (Scopus, January 2025). 

José Alemán 

Professor 

Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain 

DC4 Co-supervisor 

Prof. Alemán leads an independent research group since 2015. Her group currently consists of 3 permanent associates, 2 “Ramón y Cajal” researchers, one assistant professor and 12 PhD students. He has an international reputation in homogeneous catalysis, including organocatalysis and photocatalysis. He has been the principal investigator of more than 20 research projects including ERC Consolidator and Proof of Concept Grants. He has been awarded with 5 research prizes and one academic recognition. With over 220 publications, his h-index is 47 (Scopus, January 2025).

Silvia Cabrera 

Associate Professor

Dr. Cabrera has over 20 years of expertise in catalysis and she currently develops new photocatalysts and photocatalytic methodologies. She has been awarded with 2 national research prizes and one academic recognition. With over 60 publications, her h-index is 28 (Scopus, January 2025).

Géraldine Masson 

Research Director

DC1 and DC3 Academic Main Supervisor

Dr. Masson is CNRS Research Director DR1 at ICSN-CNRS/Paris Saclay University, and co-directs the Labcom HitCat, a collaborative effort with the SEQENS group and CNRS. She has led an independent research group since 2008. Her group currently consists of 2 permanent associates (senior and junior), 2 postdocs and 8 PhD students. The group has an international reputation for the design, synthesis and testing of functional organic molecules. Fully recognized in the field of enantioselective organocatalysis and synthetic methodologies using photoredox catalysis, she received numerous awards. Her contributions to the field of Organic Chemistry have been recognized with numerous awards including the Diverchim Prize in Synthetic Organic Chemistry from French Organic Chemistry Division (2011), CNRS Bronze Medal (2013), Liebig Lectureship of the German Chemical Society (2016), Novacap Prize of the French Académie des Sciences Award (2017), J.-M. Lehn prize of the French Organic Chemistry Division (2019),  Junior Distinguished Member from the French Chemical Society (2020) and Cannizzaro-Arnaudon Lectureship from the Italian Chemical Society (2023). With more than 140 articles, her h-index is 46 (Scopus, January 2025).  

Luc Neuville

Dr. Neuville is Director of Research associated to Dr. Masson. He has a broad expertise in metal-promoted catalysis within heterocycles and total synthesis. With over 70 articles, his h-index is 37 (Scopus, January 2025).

Olga García Mancheño 

Professor

Prof. García Mancheño is an expert in the field of homogeneous catalysis, including non-covalent organocatalysis and photocatalysis, and oxidative C-H functionalization (> 90 articles). She has been principal investigator of more than 15 research projects including an ERC Consolidator Grant. With over 100 articles, his h-index is 40 (Scopus, January 2025). 

Gustavo Pascual

Dr. Pascual has over 20 years of experience in developing scalable synthetic routes for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), route optimization, semi-industrial scale-up, and flow chemistry.

Francisco Tato

DC2 Industry Supervisor  

Dr. Tato is Group Leader of Medicinal Chemistry and Route Optimization Group. With over 10 years of experience in industry, he is an expert in the area of Medicinal Chemistry and route optimization. He has a strong background in synthesis and scale-up.  

Volker Derdau 

Project Manager

DC3 Industry Supervisor  

Dr. Derdau is the Head of the Center of Excellence Isotope Chemisty and Senior Distinguished Scientist. With over 25 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, he is an expert in the area of homogeneous catalysis, including radiochemistry and photocatalysis. He is author of over 70 articles and patents. 

María Méndez

Dr. Méndez Pérez is the Head of Medicinal Chemistry and Global Project Coordinator. She is an expert in the area of Medicinal Chemistry with strong background in synthesis and catalysis. She is author of over 30 publications and patents.

Gérard Guillamot 

Scientific Director

DC5 and DC6 Industry Supervisor 

Dr. Guillamot is currently Scientific Director at Seqens. He served as R&D project leader from 1984 to 1993 under Merrell Dow organization then as an R&D manager from 1993 to 1998 under Schwarz Pharma, before getting a position of R&D Director (1999 to 2017) within PCAS (now a division of Seqens).

Julien Boutet 

Innovation & Biotechnology Director

DC5 and DC6 Co-supervisor 

Dr. Boutet graduated in Chemistry from the École Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Rennes (France) and he obtained the PhD in 2008 by the Paris Descartes University and the Pasteur Institute (France). He worked for 5 years at Glycom A/S in Copenhagen (R&D) and Budapest (scale-up). Then he worked for more than 5 years at Adisseo (China), where he participated in the creation of a new R&D center (Center of Innovation of Adisseo Chemistry, CINACHEM) and worked on the Adisseo production unit in Nanjing, China (BANC, Bluestar Adisseo Nanjing Co.). Since 2022 he is responsible for Innovation at SEQENS and since August 2024 he is the Innovation & Biotechnology Director at the same company. He is co-author of 15 scientific publications and more than 30 patents. 

Damla Torun 

High Throughput Experimentation Platform Manager

Dr. Torun graduated from University of Strasbourg (France) and obtained the PhD in 2022 by the University of Orléans (France). She worked for 6 months in Géraldine Masson’s Group at the Institut de Chimie des Substances Naturelles (ICSN-CNRS, France) before starting her current position at Seqens (France) in September 2023 as High Throughput Experimentation Platform Manager.
