Last week, the PIA MSCA Doctoral Network successfully completed two high-level scientific training courses in Germany, bringing together our doctoral candidates, academic partners, and industry collaborators for an intensive and enriching learning experience.

Specialised Course 4: Isotope Science in Drug Discovery (Sanofi, Germany)

The first part of the training took place over two days at Sanofi (Germany), in close collaboration with our partner Dr. Volker Verdau. Doctoral researchers had a unique opportunity to explore firsthand how a leading pharmaceutical company operates and innovates.

Throughout the course, Sanofi’s top scientists delivered insightful presentations covering the full spectrum of drug development, from the identification of an initial hit to the eventual launch of a medicine on the market. The training also included guided tours of state‑of‑the‑art facilities, including advanced research laboratories and pharmaceutical formulation labs, giving participants a deeper understanding of industrial workflows, technologies, and decision-making processes that drive successful drug discovery programs.

Specialised Course 2: Reaction Mechanisms and Catalysis (University of Münster)

The second part of the week was hosted at the University of Münster, coordinated by our partner Prof. Olga García Mancheño and featuring Dr. Leyre Marzo as invited scientist and co-instructor.

Over two and a half days, the doctoral candidates worked in teams to carry out three different photochemical reactions in the laboratory. Following the experimental work, they performed several analytical and characterization techniques to investigate the underlying reaction mechanisms. The training concluded with each team analyzing their results and delivering a scientific presentation, which was then discussed collectively with Prof. García Mancheño, Dr. Marzo, and the rest of the students.

This hands‑on approach not only strengthened the students’ practical laboratory skills but also reinforced their understanding of mechanistic organic chemistry and catalytic processes.

Beyond the scientific programme, the week also offered valuable opportunities to connect with partners and colleagues in Frankfurt and Münster. Thanks to the social activities organized by our hosts, participants enjoyed local cuisine, explored the cultural highlights of both cities, and strengthened professional and personal bonds within the network.

A big thank you to Olga and Volker for their dedication and exceptional organisation.
We look forward to the next PIA training event!
